Hilary grew up playing piano for 4 years when she was young, and singing in church with her family. In Junior High she began playing trumpet and took private lessons for trumpet all through college. She also took private lessons in voice, piano, trombone, clarinet, viola, and percussion. Her voice lessons lasted a year with emphasis on classically singing in English, French, and German. Her piano privates in college lasted two years focusing on classical music.
Hilary continued to play trumpet throughout college as she studied music education. Her curriculum in music education gave her a background in child development and psychology. She graduated with a bachelors in music education from Southern Nazarene University after completing an internship at both the high school and middle school level before moving on to an elementary school, as well. Her internships lasted half a school semester term each, one half in high school and junior high and the other half elementary. After that experience, Hilary pursued music teaching at Roosa Elementary school in Claremore, Oklahoma, where she started the school's first after-school choir program and taught young choir students to perform and audition. She also taught an after school drumming group.
Some of Hilary's goals for her students are to learn a life-time love and appreciation for music, to always walk away with some new knowledge, and to help students pursue the interests they want to pursue. She wants to see her voice lessons walk away with skills and understanding they can take with them their whole life, even if they don't pursue it as a career. Her style of teaching is very positive and uplifting because she believes every student can enjoy and learn from music, no matter what age. She has enjoyed teaching the youngest singers and songwriters to adult beginners wanting to re-learn the basic in piano.
Her favorite composers are Debussy, John Williams, and Eric Whitacre. Some of her favorite bands are the Beach Boys, Maroon 5, Coldplay, Carrie Underwood, and Sia.
