10 Songs About Gratitude

November is just around the corner, and with it, the anticipation of Thanksgiving. The month may make you think of pumpkin spice lattes, turkey, and cranberry sauce, but it’s also a time to reflect on your life and the many things you’re thankful for. Here’s a Thanksgiving playlist giving you 10 songs about gratitude from a variety of eras. Whether you’re grateful for friendship, family, music, or the world as a whole, we know you’ll find a song on here that speaks to you.

1. “Kind and Generous”

Natalie Merchant’s folksy hit off her Ophelia album is a simple thank you for being, well, so kind and generous.

2. “Thank You”

Dido’s “Thank You” is her biggest hit to date and was a sweet thank you to her then boyfriend for giving her “the best day of [her] life.

3. “Thank You For the Music”

Very different in style from the first two songs on the list, Abba’s “Thank You For the Music,” now featured in the musical Mamma Mia, is a beautiful thank you to the creator of music.

4. “What a Wonderful World”

No one can forget Louis Armstrong crooning “What a Wonderful World.” It’s a lovely but simple acknowledgement of the beauty of life.

5. “The Wind Beneath My Wings”

Featured in the 1988 tearjerker Beaches and famously sung by Bette Midler, “The Wind Beneath My Wings” is an unforgettable tribute to anyone who’s quietly helped you get to where you are today

6. “You’re My Best Friend”

“You’re My Best Friend,” by the band Queen, is John Deacon’s song to his wife, although it certainly applies to any close friendship

7. “You Raise Me Up”

Covered by a wide variety of artists, but possibly most famously, Josh Groban, “You Raise Me Up” is similar in meaning to “The Wind Beneath My Wings,” in that it’s a beautiful thank you to those who have lifted you up to a point you wouldn’t have made it to without them

8. “Feeling Good”

Originally from the 1965 musical Roar of the Greasepaint and covered by everyone from Nina Simone to Muse, “Feeling Good” is another acknowledgement of the beauty of what’s around us: the dragonfly out in the sun and the river running free. Any one of these great covers is sure to leave you feelin’ good.

9. “Because You Loved Me”

Famously sung by Celine Dion, “Because You Loved Me” is a thank you in really hard-to-sing power ballad form to the person who’s stood by her and acted as a light in the dark.

10. “All That We Let In”

I love this Indigo Girls song so much that I walked down the aisle to it when my husband and I got married. More lyrically complex than the other gratitude songs on this list, it’s a statement that we’re “better off for all that we let in,” from life’s heartsickness to the beauty of your loved one cooking supper on the stove.
