Although this teenager has been enrolled in formal lessons for under a year, Cate has taken music and run with it. As her teacher, Janelle, puts it, “She’s conquered several tough pop songs, ranging from Imagine Dragons, to Taylor Swift, to Adele, but the best part about Cate is her attitude: her enthusiasm is endless and contagious, and that will take her the farthest in life.”
MM: Tell me a little bit about yourself!
CM: I am pretty new to music. I have only been taking lessons for the last nine months but I have always loved singing; even when I was a toddler. I would drive my older brother crazy with my constant singing!
MM: What music do you listen to on a regular basis?
CM: I really like to listen to pop and country music, especially songs that are happy and upbeat. I also like inspirational songs.
MM: What types of music do you enjoy singing?
CM: I also like to sing pop and country songs, the same as I listen to on the radio.
MM: Do you perform at all?
CM: Only in the shower! But…I just joined OC Glee and am looking forward to performing with them. We have two concerts coming up in December.
MM: Are you involved in anything arts-related at school?
CM: I have performed in my school’s talent show for the last two years but I did not sing. I danced in both of those performances.
MM: What do you love most about singing and music lessons?
CM: I really like my singing teacher, Miss Janelle. She is very positive and encourages me to do my best. We have a lot of fun working on song together, especially on Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood songs.
MM: What do you think the hardest thing about singing is?
CM: I am working hard to improve my range and developing my head voice.
MM: What aspect of your singing or musicality do you think has improved the most with lessons?
CM: My self-confidence has really improved since I started taking lessons. The vocal exercises have really strengthened my voice and increased my vocal range.
MM: What one tip would you give to students who need motivation or who have trouble practicing?
CM: Practicing really pays off. You really need to practice every single day, and you will be amazed to see how quickly you will improve. I try to sing and do my vocal warm ups every day for at least 20 minutes. Miss Janelle was amazed at how quickly I improved in the beginning.
MM: What are you future goals for music? What do you hope to have accomplished in five years?
CM: Someday I hope to perform my music and be an inspiration for future singers.
MM: Would you rather be a pop star, or a famous songwriter? Why?
CM: I really want to be a pop star because I love to perform.
MM: Current tastes?
CM: I am currently listening to Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Paramore and Adele. My current favorite song is ‘Good Girl’ by Carrie Underwood.
