Emma is one of our remote Inside Voice students whose been taking lessons all the way from Fort Worth, Texas! An extremely versatile and self-motivated young lady, she performs in local musicals, while also remaining a member of a choir that sings everything from Baroque to folk songs and spirituals. For anyone unsure of what The Inside Voice is, it’s our video voice lesson service: Students exchange videos with their voice teacher 3 times a month and get video feedback in return. Once a month, there’s an “in-person” Skype or FaceTime lesson as well. It’s always a pleasure to listen to Emma’s gorgeous soprano voice each week via video, and I hope to get to watch her perform live one of these days!
Q & A with Emma
MM: How did you get started with singing, and how long have you been at it?
EF: I have been in a choir since I was nine and have been singing ever since.
MM: What’s your favorite performance so far, and why?
EF: My favorite performance so far has been being in the ensemble for Mary Poppins Jr. Not only did I get to sing and act, but I got to give tap dancing a try as a chimney sweep. I learned a lot and had so much fun.
MM: Who are some bands, artists, or singers who have inspired you, and why?
EF: I love to watch videos of Sierra Boggess sing. She is very versatile singer and an amazing actor. Listening to her motivates me to keep striving towards my goals as a singer and actor.
MM: What are your favorite musicals?
EF: Mary Poppins, Newsies, Beauty and the Beast, The Sound of Music, and Fiddler on the Roof.
MM: What makes you keep up your practice, and what are your goals?
EF: I try my best to keep up with practicing daily, especially if I am preparing for an audition. My short-term goal is to have a featured singing and acting role at a local theater before I graduate from high school. After high school I plan to continue to study music–either piano or voice. I do hope that I will still have time to perform in musicals.
MM: You’ve always had such a lovely voice! Did you have any training prior to the Inside Voice?
EF: As I previously mentioned, I am a part of a choir. We sing from a variety of musical genres like Baroque, Classical, Renaissance, folk songs, spirituals, hymns, etc. I think that training has provided a good foundation for singing musical theatre style music.
MM: How did you find out about the Inside Voice program, and how’s it been so far?
EF: I had my very first audition about a year and a half ago. It didn’t go very well. I knew that in order to gain some confidence with auditioning I needed some help. Taking private lessons locally was not an option at the time. We happen to come across the Inside Voice when reading a blog post from Molly’s Music about auditioning. After reading more posts and watching a few videos of Molly’s students we decided to give it a try. Taking lessons from Inside Voice was just going to be temporary to help me prepare for my next audition, but after a month or so I realized how helpful the video lessons are.
MM: Can you share about a technique or song you’ve struggled with that you’re working on overcoming?
EF: When I first attempted to sing songs from the Musical Theatre genre I was really struggling, especially with belting and mixed voice. I still have a lot to learn, but I have improved since I started taking Inside Voice lessons. Having videos of the feedback is so helpful because I can go back and listen to them when I practice.
MM: Since you’re out of state, can you tell us a little bit about the performance opportunities in your area and the places you tend to perform?
EF: There are quite a bit of opportunities in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex for performing. So far, I have only performed in shows at one local theater, Artisan Center Theater. They recently released the shows for 2020 and there are several I plan to audition for and may give another theater a try also.
MM: Do you have a dream role?
EF: Yes, I would love to be cast as Mary Poppins. I like the style of the show and the way Mary Poppins carries herself.
MM: Anything else you want to add?
EF: Inside Voice has been super helpful with not only improving my technique but also helping with song selection, audition cuts, and tracks for auditions.
