Student Spotlight: Maya A.
Maya has been a singer for many years. She started singing at the age of 4, and I’ll never forget her beautiful, plaintive performance of “When She Loved Me” at our recital over 3 years ago. Maya has done many wonderful performances since then, from “Dear Future Husband” at our Pop Star Camp, to “Pulled” at a recent recital. We’re all impressed with her lovely voice and her ability to seamlessly switch between musical theatre and pop singing. We can’t wait to see where her music takes her!
Q&A with Maya A.
MM:
What are some of your favorite hobbies, outside of music? Favorite school subjects, books, movies, shows, sports?
MA:
Drawing in my sketchbook and doing digital art. Big Harry Potter fan and love the series and movies.
MM:
How did you get started with music, and how long have you been singing?
MA:
I’ve always liked to sing since I was 4. My dad’s colleague Courtney Wiercioch’s daughter took lessons at Molly’s Music, so he signed me up. My first teacher was Kris then Emma.
MM:
What have been some of your favorite performances, and why? How do you share your music with others, beyond recitals?
MA:
I am in my third year of choir at Utt Middle School. I do talent shows with my cousins in Park City and always sing a song.
MM:
Who are a few bands/artists/musicals that have inspired you, and why?
MA:
I was originally inspired by Taylor Swift when I was in elementary school. Now I like Billie Eilish. I have been to a Katy Perry concert and a Josh Groban concert when my voice instructor Kris sang with him at the Greek Theater!
MM:
What are some of your favorite songs and why?
MA:
Right now I love a song from Super Mario Odyssey called “Jump Up Super Star.”
MM:
Can you share about a technique, skill, or song you struggled with, and how you are overcoming or have overcome it?
MA:
Performing in front of others and stage fright, but breathing and calming techniques have helped.
MM:
You have such a gorgeous voice! If you could focus on any one style, where would you go with your music?
MA:
I like contemporary music songs. EDM, hip hop, R&B is what I love now.
MM:
Is singing something you’d consider doing as a career?
MA:
Yes most definitely!
MM:
You were amazing at our Pop Star Camp a couple of years ago! Do you have any takeaways from that performance?
MA:
Have fun and be yourself!
MM:
If you could give one piece of advice to a music student just starting out, what would it be?
MA:
Start slow and be simple and progress from there. You will improve faster if you take it slow.
MM:
Do you have any music social media sites or handles you want to share?
MA:
Smule: xXPotterheadXxDeviantArt.com: SHOWMEDATSKETCH
MM:
Anything else you’d like to add?
MA:
I am in 8th grade at Utt Middle School and will be 14-years-old in March. I loved our family vacation to New York last summer and saw the Broadway musical Frozen. I just saw Blueman Group perform at Segerstrom Center.
